Reinstating the Military Draft

The draft might be regarded as a civic obligation, in some sand analogous to jury duty. Clearly there is no sincere comparison to jury duty, and even if we are to admit a draft as constitutional, it certainly violates the spirit of the 14th Amendment, to be avoided unless there is utterly and absolutely no alternative.

As a matter-of-fact matter, there is no indication that we have reached the consummation where a draft would be an acceptable option, and many reasons why a draft would not be a practical or effective solution to current or foreseeable shortfalls in voluntary military recruitment. Historically, the draft originated in an time of mass armies. These were "warm body" armies, in which the level of formulation of most soldiers, and the initiative expected of them, were both

minimal. Since the end of the draft in the 1970s, however, the American military has been change into a very different sort of fighting force, a rapier rather than a battle ax.

The equipment and tactics of the contemporaneous American military require soldiers who are highly dexterous and highly motivated, capable of responding effectively amid the extreme chaos of forward-looking combat. An army of reluctant short-term draftees, counting days the likes of prisoners, could not perform as the American military is intentional and expected to perform. It is notable that the military leadership has been emphatic in not wanting to see a return to the draft.
