In the seventeenth century slaves became the focus of trade amongst Europe and Africa. As European countries colonized North and southbound America an insatiable demand for African laborers was created. This demand format about the era of Atlantic slave trade which spanned from the seventeenth century to the 19th century. In his book The Slave Ship: A Human History, Marcus Rediker tells the story of individuals from all sides involved in the slave trade. Slave merchants and captains would conspire to run sailors into debt, and they would either be thrown in jail or sold directly to the slave ship captain and used as free labor.
