In the seventeenth century slaves became the focus of trade amongst Europe and Africa. As European countries colonized North and southbound America an insatiable demand for African laborers was created. This demand format about the era of Atlantic slave trade which spanned from the seventeenth century to the 19th century. In his book The Slave Ship: A Human History, Marcus Rediker tells the story of individuals from all sides involved in the slave trade. The genius of the slave ship was in its crew of many different roles. He breaks the whole process of transporting slaves big money into four distinct but directly related clement dramas (Rediker, 6). By breaking down the event into four dramas Rediker successfully tells a tale of suffering and survival on a personal level by going in wisdom into each drama, the relationships between the slave ship captains and their crew, the relationship between sailors and slaves, how the enslaved conflicted and cooperated amongst each other, and the struggle between slave-trading merchants and abolitionists.

Slave merchants and captains would conspire to run sailors into debt, and they would either be thrown in jail or sold directly to the slave ship captain and used as free labor. Merchants in hobbyhorse of profit would set the low wages and poor workings conditions for sailors. To save space for the human cargo, they put crews on a short allowance of food and water. When ships reached the West Indies and the slaves were sold, captains often covey crew members even more mercilessly, hoping they would desert, forfeiting the wages that were waiting for them at home port.
