Most theories, culture and experiments concerning psychology are based on a Eurocentric models (Meyer, Moore & Viljoen, 2008). South Africans have many similar problems and needs as people in the West, but they also have issues which are particular to South Africa. It is the role of the South African psychologist to and then create an Afrocentric approach or African perspective on psychology (Meyer, Moore & Viljoen, 2008). South African psychologists have a responsibility to create an approach which should be sensitive to the relevance of psychology in a South African context, considering issues like ethnical practice and understanding of psychology; social factors; resources available; and raising of psychologists (Rock & Hamber, 1994).
There are five different disciplines which a psychologist can train and register for in South Africa. They are Clinical, Counselling, Educational, industrial and Research Psychology. Clinical psychologists evaluate and deal with cognitive, internal and behavioural disorders.
