The beautiful and heartwarming film, â€Å"Look Both Ways” tells of the fears and paranoia a person can have concerning the ever inevitable truth of death. Through many characters, we are shown that indeed, in life â€Å"things just happen” and the attempt to somehow change or dodge fate is truly impossible.

The character of Meryl, an aspiring artist financial support in â€Å"poverty” as she most condemningly describes her lifestyle is unbelievably paranoid and fearful of dying in the most graphic, frightening and violent ways. Through the use of animation, we are able to take up her deepest feelings of woe, and the way she plans life through her eyes. In many of her paintings we see images of a lone figure drowning, ring by five-fold numbers of sharks. Meryl openly admits that she is â€Å"scared stupid to do anything approximately (death)”.

We are able to see that she believes that nothing can be done about fate and that sadly she feels isolated surrounded by sharks (dangers), just waiting to die.

Similarly to Meryl is Nick, a photojournalist for a local newspaper, who feels alone and scared of dying. He, as was his late father, has been diagnosed with testicular cancer. In the opening scene of the movie we see the diagnosis being given from his doctor who, wearing a shark tie, proclaims that noting can be done until a specialist is seen on the following Monday. Throughout the film we are shown disjointed snip sequences and flashbacks to his father’s struggles.
