Arthur Dimmesdale, a greatly respected Puritan pastor committed adultery with Hester Prynne. However, at the time, everyone believed Hesters husband to be dead already seeing that he has been missing for oer two years. So his crime was somewhat justified, but a sin is still a sin nevertheless. He was ineffective to confess his crime at first due to his cultism and shame but then could not confess because the towns bulk began to view him as a nonesuch and became spiritually reliant on him. This caused Hester to be the sole attack aircraft carrier of the scarlet letter A on her chest; which in turn caused Dimmesdale much more guilt.
Finding no opposite way to repent for his sins, Dimmesdale inflicted upon himself a great deal of physical damage by curving out the scarlet letter on his chest. He felt an enormous amount of guilt but was unable to come out and repent for his sins openly, so the only way he could punish himself was to secretly gouge himself. Many times, however, he came close to telling people the uprightness during his sermons and said he was the worst of all sinners but the people of the town still did not think he was a sinner and only took this truth as a sign of honest and reverence.
