For a poor family like those of Rosa , they can t afford honorable a low quality pillow and the poor mother had to offer her hardly possession which is the shawl . In this story , Rosa inherits a very expensive shawl from her naan . Actually , Rosa came from a rich family but their family business was ruined during the disconnection War . When the US attacked their country , most of her family members died during the bombing including her grandmother . Even in the middle of poverty caused by fight she refused to sell her shawl because of its sentimental value to her She values the shawl so a lot that she was torn between her love for the shawl and her 15 weeks old infant . Actually she can sell her expensive shawl for their food but it is hard for her to let her precious possession go . digression from its great value , it is the only thing that will propel her of her grandmother . It is really difficult for her to see her impair tears because of hunger but she can t sell her precious possession .

She asked her niece Stella to take care of Magda but she refused to follow her aunt . Just like the original story , Shawl served as a place of refuge for Magda . It protected her from the dangerous heat during the day and extreme cold at nighttime . Because of that , Rosa s niece Stella was so angry because she wants to sell the shawl . Every night she can t sleep thinking about the value of the shawl and how she can steal it from her auntie . She can t extreme poverty and the only solution that she can think is to steal the shawl . At initial , Stella was not successful in stealing the shawl . Every time Stella removes the shawl from Magda s frail body , the baby will cry obstreperously .
